The inconvenient truth about Doer’s environmental policy

The Premier loves to wrap himself in a green (organic?) flag, and claim to be a champion for the environment. How then does he explain his government’s decision to raise the speed limit along several sections of highway to 110 km/h? I don’t personally object to the change, but there’s no question it will increase greenhouse gas emissions in Manitoba.

While he’s at it, maybe the Premier could explain why his government offers a purchase incentive for hybrid vehicles, but nothing for normally aspirated vehicles that actually get better overall mileage than some hybrids (like a Honda Civic vs. a Toyota Highlander hybrid)? Contrast this with the federal government’s ecoAUTO program, which offers incentives based on fuel efficiency, not just technology.

Finally Gary, how does maintaining one of the lowest fuel tax rates in the country help reduce consumption and improve the environment? Again, I’m not necessarily lobbying for an increase, but if you’re serious about this issue then why aren’t you taking all the appropriate steps?

I could also go on a lengthy rant about the government’s hydro policies, but I’ve covered that ground enough times lately. The bottom line is that if Doer truly wants to go down in history as an environmental crusader, he’s going to have to stop putting politics ahead of policy and votes ahead of values. Burning jet fuel to attend photo-ops with Arnie or cutting the ribbon on a few new windmills (no doubt accompanied by an armada of government vehicles) might help you win elections, but it doesn’t make you a leader.
