Kennerd stuck on the sidelines of stadium debate

Where the hell has Trevor Kennerd been during this whole stadium debate?

If you recall, Kennerd had David Asper by his side last April when he announced his candidacy for the Conservatives in Winnipeg South Centre.

But as Asper engaged in a minor pissing contest with Vic Toews through much of 2007, Kennerd was MIA. And even in the past few weeks, as Joy Smith and Rod Bruinooge broke ranks with Toews and declared their support for Asper, and as Toews himself eventually abandoned his own principles, Kennerd was still nowhere to be seen (except for smiling down from a shiny new billboard on Academy).

The only reason Trevor Kennerd is a “star candidate” is because he used to be a Bomber. Yeah I know, he runs his own business and been involved in all sorts of community work, but no one really cares. His Bomber history is his calling card. He might as well wear a jersey on the campaign trail.

So why has he stayed on the bench during discussions about the stadium? Does he figure this issue just won’t play in Winnipeg South Centre? If that’s the case, then I wonder if he’s picked the right riding in the first place. Was he just afraid of pissing off Toews? And why haven’t the local media pinned him down on this yet?

Not that it matters too much. I have no doubt if and when stadium funds are announced that we’ll see pics of several jersey-clad Conservatives giggling like idiots while one of them holds the ball for Kennerd to kick. And then word will leak out that he was actually quietly working behind the scenes on this issue, rather than cowering under his helmet waiting to see which way the wind blows.

UPDATE: I just realized that Curtis posed a similar question on his blog back in October. Damn me and my unoriginal thoughts.
