Credit to Tory Leader Hugh McFadyen, who said on CJOB this morning his party is open to the idea of moving to market rates for hydro power in Manitoba, provided the increases were matched by reductions to personal and corporate taxes.
McFadyen drew the comparison to Alberta, where oil and gas is sold at market rates and the provincial government uses royalties to keep taxes low.

But you know what? That’s exactly the kind of common-sense idea that Hugh needs to take into the next election. None of the gimmicks or mimicking of the NDP. How long before the next election? 3 to 4 years? damn …
True, although this one does require a major education effort.
It’s just too easy for the government to spin it as, “McFadyen wants to double your hydro rate! And then he’s going to sell the company!”
It’s dishonest, but sadly it works.
