– I’m with The Hack on the tuition freeze, I’ll believe it when I see it. The government obviously floated a trial balloon yesterday, and I don’t know whether student “outrage” has been enough to pop it yet. By the way, did you know the average Manitoba post-secondary student graduates with a debt load that’s about half the size of the national average?
– Agreeing with Pat Martin makes me feel icky, sorta like I have a small case of rabies. However, I will back his effort to rid us of the scourge of the penny. There are NO logical reasons for keeping it around.
– So the end result of the Sun’s “Read Red” ad campaign and effort to consult with readers is that they moved the sports to the back of the paper? Wow, that’s going to drive subscriptions through the roof. Unfortunately, one thing that didn’t change was the Sun’s annual laaaaaaaammme attempt at April Fool’s humour. Particularly bad was yesterday’s front page, which featured fake headlines about a new football stadium and a world curling do-over surrounding an actual headline about the weekend’s triple-murder. Way to keep it classy Sun!
– I’ve said it before, and I will continue to say it every time an innocent person is killed by some moron driving a stolen car: make immobilizers mandatory on every vehicle in the province.
– I pretty much never want to hear about this topic again, but I had to laugh at yesterday’s column by Upper Fort Garry publicist Gordon Sinclair. It confirmed — as I suspected all along — that there is no real plan for the Fort site, just a bunch of pretty, vague drawings. There’s apparently no timeline either, as Friends of Upper Fort Garry spokesperson Jerry Gray says the finished product is about five years away. So instead of building a heritage park this year to recognize the “birthplace of Manitoba,” we have to wait five years to build the same park with an empty interpretive centre attached to it. Nice!
– It’s cute how the City’s new CAO is so positive and up-beat. I give it a month before he starts wondering what the hell he’s got himself into.

Perhaps the plans for the UFG are farther along than you think:

In honour of the timeless artifacts Mr. Sinclair was so adamant about preserving, the interpretive centre should reflect the contents to be displayed….
I don’t know if it’s the students who truly have no clue going on or if student unions *cough*UMSU*cough* just say that all the students want to keep the freeze. This of course, explains why they get a whopping 3 people to show up for “lobby the government to support the freeze” demonstrations.
I also don’t know if any of the above mentioned people have ever taken a science course like me. If they did, they’d most likely wonder why we have such shitty lab equipment. The answer is simple: the university can’t afford it.
All that whining by UMSU to support the freeze and I still have to pay them a couple hundred bucks. And they wonder why I don’t vote in their elections. Nobody runs for UMSU president who supports LIFTING the freeze!
