Today so far…

Thoughts on a couple of stories that got my attention today:

Waverley Underpass

The average single-family home produces 10 car trips every day? Geez, if that wasn’t reason enough not to build Waverley West (at least not where it is), then I don’t know what was. That said, I agree with Bruinooge and Leipsic that this project warrants some further consideration.

The price shouldn’t be anywhere near the $44 million that Kenaston cost, as that project involved significant roadwork in the area, while Waverley would be more of a straight underpass. In addition to funding from the feds, I seem to recall hearing that CN has an outstanding obligation to partially fund an underpass in this location as well.

While It would be a tight fit, the City has been sitting on the former short-game golf training centre at the corner of Waverley/Taylor for this purpose.

Library park

Another example of Katz’s inability to light a fire under the civic administration. 3+ years and a seriously downsized project. By the way, why is funding for park renewal being spent on parking garage renewal? Shouldn’t the Winnipeg Parking Authority — which is supposed to be run like a real grown-up business — fund this work? Then again, maybe they could if Council wasn’t raiding their accounts every year to balance budgets.

Inverted Hydro rates

A positive development, but it’s such a baby step that it’s hardly worth talking about. I agree with Dan Lett though, that the most alarming and interesting part of the story is that electricity consumption in booming Saskatchewan is going down by 3% a year while it’s increasing by 7% annually in Manitoba.

And a note to Bob Brennan: an energy hog is an energy hog, regardless of the method of generation. And seeing as how global warming doesn’t recognize provincial jurisdictions, shouldn’t we be doing what we can to reduce our own consumption and share our nice green power with those who don’t have any?

One of these things is not like the others

The Hack is threatening to live blog the inaugural meeting of the Winnipeg Citizens Coalition. For all their talk of being a “broad-based” collection of individuals, this thing is tilting heavily to the left with involvement from various social democrat groups and anti-corporate cranks. Hackster should be real cozy mixing with that crowd.

Uh guys, I think you forgot something…

It’s well known that the City’s Corporate Communications Department features some of the best paid, best pensioned, spindoctors in town (just ask Brodbeck). So how was it that they managed to put out a news release last week about the City’s new “sharrows” (shared use bike and car lanes) that didn’t mention the upcoming Bike to Work Day?

Thankfully the Mayor’s spinners picked up the slack on Friday with their own non-news release, but it doesn’t take a PR genius to connect a few dots and realize the administration fell down here. Time to put the training wheels back on?

By the way, Bike to Work Day is this Friday, June 20, with some sweet prizes up for grabs for those who register in advance.
