Shuffling the deck chairs

So I’m wondering, what has PC Manitoba had more of since 1999: new executive directors or new logos? Either way, word is the party will be refreshing both of them soon.
Boy wonder Doug Schweitzer is rumoured to be heading back to Calgary, less than a year after taking over the CEO position at 23 Kennedy. [...]

He said what?

From the Free Press story on IKEA:
Premier Gary Doer said Wednesday the provincial government and the city have been meeting Ikea for some time, and he hinted the province may have offered some incentives to lure the company.
Are you kidding me? Government incentives to lure IKEA to town? I wonder how all the other furniture [...]

Winnipeg Radio Ratings – Survey 4 2008

It appears the federal election gave a nice boost to the local talk stations during the most recent radio ratings period (Sept. 1 – Oct. 26) as both CJOB and CBC Radio One recorded massive listener increases.
CJOB led all stations with a 17.0% share of the market, up from 14.5% in the summer. Radio One [...]

CJOB sees a unicorn

CJOB is running with all-IKEA-all-the-time coverage this morning based on “rumours from City Hall and within the development and construction communities” (how often have we heard that before?) and a vague statement of interest from the company itself. Apparently the proposed site (this time around) is near the corner of Kenaston and Sterling Lyon Parkway.
Oy [...]

A mighty wind

So, Manitoba is slated to be home to the largest wind farm in Canada. Good news I suppose, although I’m interested to see what Manitoba Hydro will pay for this electricity versus what it can be sold for on the domestic or export market.
I’m also interested to see if this will spark further wind-power related [...]

Building a better zoo

I’m not going to get overly sentimental about Debby — she lived a good life — but really, what is our zoo without a polar bear? Have you been there recently? Some animals are identified by laminated cards attached to their cages, the dated enclosures left from long-ago visits by panda bears and koalas are [...]

Let’s get our terminology straight

There’s been much fear-mongering lately about the evils of privatization as part of the discussion about converting the water & waste department into a City-owned utility. So I thought a brief lesson in the difference between privatization, contracting out and public-private partnerships might be in order:

Privatization occurs when a government stops providing a particular service, [...]

The new rhetoric…a lot like the old rhetoric

If this is what Hugh actually said, then it illustrates perfectly that the provincial Tories still haven’t figured out  that the game has changed:
Progressive Conservative Leader Hugh McFadyen previewed the upcoming legislative session today by accusing the ruling New Democrats of leading the province into economic ruin.
Is there anyone out there — partisan or non [...]

How does this make any sense?

The current CJOB web poll:
Do you think Winnipeg Transit will run more efficiently with the five new diamond lane locations, or is it just a money grab?
Who writes these things? Seriously, questions like this make the Sun web polls (current question: Will you purchase gifts online this holiday season?) look like a heartbreaking work of [...]

Want to work in the Obama White House?

If you’re reading this, I assume you know how to work a computer. That probably means you’d be disqualified from working for the Obama White House based on this criterion alone:
If you have ever sent an electronic communication, including but not limited to an email, text message or instant message, that could suggest a conflict [...]
