  1. Over the past 20 years or so, Eaton Place/Cityplace was kind of like the aging relative who was slowly dying, and whose death everyone had already come to terms with by the time it actually happened.

I don’t know if this is realistic or not, but my hope is that the loss of retail space at Cityplace and the opening of the Hydro building will encourage more street-level development between the MTS Centre and The Bay.

  2. Come on now, did you see any business buying Citiplace? It’s been dying for years, and nothing is sadder than an old mall…in hindsight, the whole Eaton Place scheme was a waste, but at least the space is to be used rather than left to rot on the beach of underused downtown retail space…I agree with KM, the cutting down of excess retail space plus any possible influx of downtown employees is good for the remaining unused downtown space…

Linking one’s increase in car insurance to the price tag of this transaction is spurious at best…any transaction regarding buildings comes out of a capital budget, rather than an operating budget which monitors our rates…which are subject to inflation, by the way…MPI needed a building, and while $81.5 million is a lot of money, it pales besides otherf alternatives…

funny, we want our government-related agencies to operate on a smart business model when it saves us money, yet we bitch when they act like a business to insure future viability in terms of office space. get a grip.

OK, I’m ready for the inevitable response about that MPI has gouges people on immobilzers, that they should have offices in moldy buildings throughout the city, that they overcharged me on my old Civic…
