Rockefeller style

City Hall will soon get its 2009 Christmas tree (which is somehow worthy of coverage in nearly all media, but whatever).

A suggestion for future years though, rather than placing the tree right in front of Sam’s Place, why not relocate it to Old Market Square?

It wouldn’t work this year due to continuing renos at the park, but I’d think the tree would be far more appreciated in the heart of the Exchange. Besides, aren’t they looking to transform Old Market Square into a skating rink in the winter? Skating rink + big Christmas tree…hmm…where have I seen that before?

  1. That’s a fantastic idea.

  2. That’s a good idea.

Why not have a really big tree at the Forks too!!!

  3. Maybe what City Hall needs instead of a Xmas tree is a nice bonfire – made out of the deadwood around City Hall!

  4. Love that idea.

  5. have you ever asked who pays for the ice rink and tree at Rockefeller?

  6. @Timo – Corporate dollars I’m sure. However, the City is already paying for Christmas trees and the City/Exchange Biz is already planning on building a skating rink. Bundle them together with carols played over a loudspeaker system, xmas lights on trees and buildings, and a nearby retailer slinging hot chocolate, and you’ve got something that should attract sponsor interest.

  7. City Hall is getting a Christmas tree this year? I’ve been too enraptured in the ongoing coverage of the lotto winners to pay attention to this piece of breaking news.

  8. It should go near the new IKEA.

Where all the Winnipeggers will be.

  9. It’s a great idea — but don’t base it too much on Rockefeller Centre. My gf and I went ice-skating there a couple years back, because we felt it would be romantic.

Well, it was! But it was also weird, to a Canadian.

The Rockefeller ice rink is tiny, smaller than many community centre rinks. And you have to pay for the privilege of skating there — it was pricey, too, though I can’t recall how much. Certainly enough that I think it was a profit centre, not a cost.

You pay by the hour … and by “by the hour” I mean you get to step on the ice at 3:05 and it’s everybody off by 3:55 for the next shift. And if you don’t happen to get your skates tied up until 3:20, well too bad for you, off the ice at the same time as everyone else.

Oh, and “skating” means just go around counterclockwise, around and around and around. Stopping for pictures get’s you a nice talking-to from security, unless you’re a hurry-up type.

Honestly, it was fun, I’m glad we did it, and everyone was in a good mood. But it’s not a “skating rink” the way I ever understood it.
